Happy Halloween!! (and homework!)

I want to say a special "THANKS!" to all of the parents who helped make our grade five Halloween celebration a success. Many of you made or bought goodies to share with the class and everyone enjoyed your thoughtfulness. We may have gotten an early start to the Halloween sweety munchies... hopefully there's still room left for all of those treats tomorrow!!

I'd also like to say another thanks on behalf of our entire class to our special guest of the day, Heidi's mom Gesine. Gesine came in this morning with a tray full of cupcakes and helped the class decorate them beautifully to look like spiders! We all had a blast and enjoyed eating the finished product! Thanks again Gesine :)

Finally, to you kiddos who were so wonderful in class today (and everyday I suppose!), please, please, please have a HAPPY and SAFE Halloween! I wish I could see each one of you dressed up and excited to go out tomorrow night, but if you look anything like you did today you will rock this Halloween for sure.

Have fun you guys! Can't wait to hear about it all Monday :)

New Teacher Mistake! - Sorry!

I want to apologize for putting pictures of your children on this website! I thought that the media release forms meant student pictures could go on the school website, therefore making it ok to have them on our class website as well. However they are not allowed on either! I'm sorry if my ignorance offended anyone. This is a lesson learned on my part. Mr. Arsenault was kind enough to let me know this morning that I should not have them on this site so I have taken them off. I do enjoy bringing you into our classroom every so often, so I will try sending pictures via email if our server will allow it! Thanks for your support so far this year :)

Pumpkin Cupcake Poetry!

Today we were learning about shape poetry. Mrs.Craig gave us a topic and it was on pumpkin cupcakes. We started to write and she came around and put a pumpkin cupcake on each of our desks. She said "Don't touch them or eat them, just look at them to get an idea." What she was thinking was "Ha ha ha. I will torture those innocent kids, make them look at a delicious treat and not allow them to eat it, HA HA HA!!!" Well maybe not, but that's what I thought she was thinking. I just hope she will eventually let us eat them!

Here is my shape poety.

It's
a cupcake. It's a
pumpkin. Oh it's the best
thing my taste buds have ever
encountered!! I hope they
don't mind if I...

Tuesday Night Homework

MATH TEST TOMORROW!!
Please go over your review from today's class. This covers everything you will have to know for the test. Also, see below for our steps for rounding if you need to go over it with your parents!

Speller: Get test signed

S.S. Mongolian penpal letter

French: Test tomorrow

Please take in all forms and book orders that still need to come back!!

Math: Rounding

When rounding, first find your rounding place. Remember your place value. If the question says "Round to the nearest hundred", the number in the hundreds place is in your rounding place.

In the number 9365, the number in your rounding place is the 3.

After you find your rounding place (underline it if you need to!), look to the number to its right. In this case you would look at the 6. Now you have to remember your rounding rules.

1-4 rounds down to 0
5-9 rounds up to 10

10 & 0 remain the same.

Decide if the number to the right of the rounding place rounds up or down. So:

9365 "3" is in the rounding place. "6" is to its right. We know 6
rounds up to 10.

Now the number in your rounding place (3) can only do two things: It will go up one or remain the same. Therefore, 3 will either stay a 3 or go up to four. If you round up, the 3 changes to a 4. If you round down, the 3 stays the same.

Therefore, because we know 6 rounds up, we know our 3 is going to become a 4.

EVERYTHING to the right of the rounding place turns to 0
EVERYTHING to the left of the rounding place remains the same.

Therefore, the number 9365, when rounding to the nearest hundred, rounds up to 9400.

Here are some more examples:

Round to the nearest 10: 89,238 rounds up to 89,240
Round to the nearest 1,000: 925,319,275 rounds down to 925,319,000
Round to the nearest 100: 92,385 rounds up to 92,400

To review, here are the steps:

1) Find your rounding place
2) Look at the number to the right of the rounding place
3) Round up or down. The number in the rounding place will go up 1 or stay the same.
4) Change all numbers to the right of the rounding place to 0
5) All numbers to the left of the rounding place stay the same

I hope this helps you!! Happy studying :)

BOOK ORDERS DUE!

Thanks for a GREAT day!

BOOK ORDERS DUE TOMORROW!!

What a successful day! Our class went to Orwell Corner Historic Village today and had a great time. I could not have asked for a better class to spend a beautiful fall day with. We arrived in the morning and had a tour of the town hall, schoolhouse, church, farm museum, general store and blacksmith shop. We asked many questions and learned all about what life was like in the late 1800's to early 1900's. The workers were excited to see that so many students dressed for the time period - way to go guys!! After eating a picnic lunch we made candles, took carriage rides and watched a blacksmith demonstration. I think we were all very excited by it all. However, the entire class (teacher included) was wiped by the time we got back to the school. Poor Gabby fell asleep on the bus!

I hope you all tell your parents what you have learned and the interesting things we saw today. Hopefully this is a trip you will remember for a lifetime. I bet Colby will remember it - she lost a tooth in her caramel apple sucker!

Can't wait to see you guys tomorrow. Thanks again for a wonderful day. I meant what I said - I am SO very proud of each one of you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Craig

Don't forget to dress in costume for that time period (long sleeves and long pants for boys - jeans are ok - and dresses, long skirts, long sleeved blouses for girls! If you have a good hat wear it too - or braids. No, not for you Noah, just for the girls!) Also, DRESS FOR THE WEATHER!!! Sweaters, rain coats, rubber boots, etc. if the weather looks iffy. I want everyone to be comfortable and have a great day. Can't wait to go with you guys :)
